The Little Mornings, by C M Albrecht is a murder mystery
with 262 absolutely absorbing pages. We have three main
characters here - the grandfather, an alcoholic of
questionable character, a slightly off balance woman
(Angie) and an impressionable young man (Darcy) who
becomes mixed up in a whirlwind of events. Murder, thievery
and lies keep the unsteady relationship between Darcy and
Angie on edge. Keeping a secret is no easy task, especially
when someone else pops into the scene with inside
knowledge to the truth. Darcy, unable to control the events,
becomes another person entirely from the one we knew in
the first few pages of the book.

Perhaps because I am a writer, and this book has to do with
the publishing industry, I am partial to the theme.
Grandfather’s description of a writer’s methods to reach
their creative dreams had me laughing out loud - because it
was so true. As were the frustrated, aspiring writers and the
over worked publishers. I felt the book was very realistic in
this regard.

I loved the first few paragraphs - they really pulled me in. I
kept hearing Humphry Bogart’s voice in my head narrating
the story as I read along. I sat on the edge of an
uncomfortable plastic chair 2 days ago and opened the first
page to begin reviewing The Little Mornings. I meant to take
only a ten-minute break from my day to enjoy the sunshine.
The next thing I knew, my leg and butt-cheek were both
completely numb and lifeless… and I was on page 50! So
be warned, readers, this book may very well take you out of
commission for a few days. I could not wait to get back to it
every minute I had to spare!

The adventure begins long ago in a place far away when orphaned, supposed, peasant boy Bob sets off to locate a fearsome dragon terrorizing a village. Bob had been roaming about, doing odd jobs and hoping for handouts. As Bob crawled forward intent upon his quest to see the dragon albeit from a safe distance a voice sounded. “I can grant you power to slay to slay the dragon …” Thus Bob and Stephen, a new graduate of wizard school AND perhaps cousin of Merlin of yore, who appears only to Bob and when no one else is about, begin an adventure. Before long Bob and Stephen find themselves slaying fiery dragons, searching for damsels in distress, outfitting Bob in armor, rescuing Lady Katharine, and embroiled in a battle. Castles, an evil king, lawyers, fair ladies, lofty knights and a reneged reward all help to propel the narrative forward to an agreeable conclusion. And even lawyers step in to assure that Bob is given his just and promised reward. Damsels in Distress who refuse Bob’s help because he is not an official knight are a bit of set back for Bob. On the other hand, a sword named Bruce, talking Ravens and trusty mount Spot and advice about how to go about killing dragons figure prominently as Bob and his exploits become well know throughout the land. Bob sets out to not only gain fame as the slayer of dragons, but to also lobby for the righteous treatment of the poor and downtrodden. A ring Bob has carried in his pocket will prove to be a surprise to the evil king ruling the land with an iron fist.

If you enjoy insouciant and indubitably engaging, then ‘Bob the Dragon Slayer’ is the book for you. Author Gilleland had composed a zany yarn filled with all the usual suspects for the telling of an old-time legend type narrative : there are an orphan boy on a quest, fiery dragons, a meddlesome wizard, cavalier knights, fair ladies, evil kings, civil strife, true love and a true friendship . The writer’s handling of Bob’s maturation as the lad attains an understanding of the challenges facing him is excellent. As an added bonus is Bob’s reliance as he learns to depend on and draw strength from his friends, Willie and Kate. Playful raillery scattered throughout the story adds to the flavor. There’s just enough humor to make ‘Bob the Dragon Slayer’ a pleasure to read, but not so much as to overpower the underlying virtue issues of devotion, integrity, brotherhood, and obligation.

The narrative of ‘Bob the Dragon Slayer’ is an uncomplicated telling of inevitability, hope, and devotion. Writer Gilleland does not try to encumber the anecdote with unnecessary details or peculiarities. Neither does Gilleland make the yarn pretend to be more than it is; a short and focused theme of right will prevail by centering on Bob much of the time. The story flows, the reader remains focused and doesn’t get distracted.

Audacity, renown, duplicity: This frolicsome anecdote is just plain fun to read. Composed with drollery and witticism, ‘Bob the Dragon Slayer’ will entrance readers venerable and adolescent alike. Sprinkled with whimsical colloquy and delightfully goofy characters ‘Bob the Dragon Slayer’ is sure to tickle the fancy of those searching for a good, fun read.

Not for everyone; some sexual innuendo causes the book to not be suitable for younger middle grade readers. I found the sexual references especially unnerving since the book opens with a grandfather gathering the ‘youngins’ to tell them a tale and then find him babbling about things best left to another time and place.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend. Good book for an afternoon read.

There may be criticism of reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan but what about reporting of wars very much nearer the “West”? If “The Dream of the Decade” is anything to go by, European populations were poorly served by their journalists.

While the quartet “The Dream of the Decade” treats various issues in its four novels, the final one included in the volume “Good Morning, Britain” suggests war-reporting is not very professional at all. The book has already been praised by the publishers of Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan.

“Good Morning, Britain” traces the entrance of an ingénue youngster, whose path from the North of England to London is described in the previous novel of the quartet, “A Taste of Money”, into an establishment television station. Whilst producers back in the world’s media capitals take a lot of the blame, this book shifts “Broadcast News”-style fiction to even darker levels than those found in the seminal film about TV journalism, Network by Alan J. Pakula.

With each turn, we see the incompetence but, it is Yugoslavia where an estimated 250,000 people lost their lives, that the protagonist finds himself surrounded by carelessness, ahistoricism and downright amateurism albeit attempting to be mitigated by foolish courage.

“He was keen to research the history of Yugoslavia but soon realised from the thickness of recent histories that he would have no time. Most of his preparation concerned how to get there. The easiest way, so his computer said, was to get a flight with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees which had a base in Ancona, on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The RAF, German and Belgian air forces were based there, in an operation run by the British. As he sat with the printout, he sometimes looked at the pile of video rushes that he was to log and code as a squeamishness test. The rushes had just been fed in on the “bird”, or satellite, and he had to check which images were suitable for Britain’s evening meal viewing.
The notes on Yugoslavia would at first be over-simple and then impossible. To Jonathan, the sentence “UNPROFOR cards are essential as usual but CANNOT be issued in Ancona, only in Zagreb or Belgrade” meant as little as the reasons for the war itself. Quickly, he scanned which Alitalia flights flew from Rome and Milan to Ancona. Then he looked at the possibility of travelling from Split on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The Split-Rome flight could then take him to Ancona via Rome but he was told he must bear in mind that because of NATO “air movements” the advertised flight duration of one hour was now double that.

Any time Jonathan wanted to devote to understanding the actual conflict was now wholly shelved in favour of travel arrangements. Another way to Sarajevo, he discovered, was to go to the UNHCR office located in a cargo-warehouse next door to Ancona’s customs office. Because the sentry on the gate was likely to be a British soldier, Corporation staff would be well directed, so his printout said.”
